Charging champions: The best cars with a large trunk
"I packed two large suitcases, one exclusively with swimwear and one with everyday clothes!" – anyone traveling with the (extended) family should be familiar with such or similar remarks. What can help to finally put an end to the lack of space in the car? How about a vehicle with a particularly large trunk?
Space without end: Which is the car with the largest trunk?
A large luggage compartment makes everyday life easier and does not throw a spanner in the works for a family holiday. Real loading champions can be loaded with bag and baggage and drive comfortably and spaciously to their destination. Customers who know that a lot of space will be needed for motorized transport will not be able to avoid vans, station wagons and the like.
However, it is not only the trunk volume that is important, but also how high it is – which often causes problems, especially with coupé-like models. The loading sill height, a flat insertion and possibly a flexible interior are also important criteria.
We have put together vehicles of the vehicle types van, SUV, station wagon, e-cars and small cars with a considerable load volume. The decisive factor here is the volume up to the upright second bench seat. Incidentally, such vehicles are also ideally suited for a disabled-friendly conversion. If you are travelling with the family, you can take the bikes with you in the car or with a rear bike rack if you are planning an action holiday.
Vans with a large trunk
If you really need a lot of luggage compartment volume, then you should look around at the vans or high-roof station wagons. There is definitely enough space here for a family holiday, transport or a camping trip. We have selected three models with a large trunk and from different price categories for you:
Model | Offers from | |
Citroen e-Spacetourer | 45.706 € | Compare offers |
VW Multivan | €45,519 | Compare offers |
Dacia Jogger | €17,490 | Compare offers |
1. Citroen e-Spacetourer and Peugeot e-Traveller – Group twins
The Citroen e-Spacetourer and the Peugeot e-Traveller each shine with a whopping 2,011 liters of trunk space up to the rear row of seats. Both giant vehicles come from the same company – both Citroen and Peugeot belong to the Stellantis Group. This may explain why we list both models here. In the end, it is largely a decision based on appearance, because both models come with the same features.
Of course, the two models are particularly interesting for trunk lovers on the one hand, but also for large families - up to 7 people with luggage can each be accommodated and can still stretch their tired limbs up in a relaxed manner on long journeys. But that's not all: Friends of electric drive will also get their money's worth with the e-Spacetourer and the e-Traveller. Citroen's large family ship can travel 224 kilometers, Peugeot's family galley manages 223 kilometers.
If you're simply looking for a lot of space, an enormous trunk and a low price, you'd better treat yourself to the e-Spacetourer: It takes almost 8,000 euros less out of your wallet when you buy it. But friends of elegant design can also enjoy the two vehicles: The facelifts that come with the new electric drives ensure that the two still look attractive due to their sheer width and height.
By the way: If you want it to be a little smaller, there are also great VW Caddy alternatives.
Fact check:
✅ 2,011 litres of boot space
✅ Accommodates 7 people
✅ Electric motor
✅ Easy-to-use infotainment system
2. VW Multivan – The classic
The Multivan has been able to hold its own as a minibus for generations and, as a current model, is more modern and digital than ever before. For the first time, it was also available as a plug-in hybrid until 2023 and as a ID.Buzz it is even completely electric.
It has lost its former commercial vehicle flair, but it has also lost a little charm. Of course, the sliding door, which is included as standard on the right side, is practical, and then also on the left side for higher equipment. There is a lot of space in the interior, but not as usable as you would think. The floor rails allow all elements to be moved freely or installed and removed.
With full seating, there is still 469 liters of trunk volume left, if you want to stack up to behind the second row of seats, you have 1,844 liters available - with roof-high use behind the first row of seats, an enormous 3,672 liters fit in. Insufficient? Then maybe the long version, which can accommodate 4,005 liters.
Fact check:
✅ 469 liters trunk volume
✅ Sliding doors at the rear
✅ High functionality
✅ The seats can be removed individually
3. Dacia Jogger – Price-Performance Winner
If you like to concentrate on the essentials while driving and can do without too much comfort and other bells and whistles, you can be really happy with the Dacia Jogger. For what it offers, the price is unbeatable: up to 7 seats, modern look, very generous trunk and sophisticated engine technology.
In the meantime, Dacia even offers a touch screen, smartphone linkage and a plug-in hybrid, which is even very economical. If you want air conditioning, reversing camera and keyless go, you can take the higher equipment and still pay less than 20,000 euros.
For everyday life, holidays or moving, the jogger is ideally suited and for little money. Well done Dacia!
Fact check:
✅ 607-1,819 liters trunk volume
✅ Plug-in hybrid on offer
✅ Surcharge for assistance systems manageable
✅ Great price
SUV with large trunk
If a van is not sporty enough for you, you can fall back on an SUV. Especially with the large SUVs, there are of course also models with a large trunk. They are usually not cheap, but we have tried to combine size and price in our selection:
Model | Offers from | |
Land Rover Defender | 62.037 € | Compare offers |
Kia Sorento | €39,107 | Compare offers |
Peugeot 5008 | 31.660 € | Compare offers |
1. Land Rover Defender – Off-Road Vehicle Legend
The Land Rover Defender – a true legend. The legendary name has existed on the automotive market since 1948, and the legend has survived almost eight decades to date. The perennial favorite, whose model life has survived many historical events, was reissued in 2020 after a four-year break and returns in the old legend manner and in a modern attitude, so to speak. But legend or not: What counts are the inner values, as they say.
In the five-door version called Defender 110, the off-road vehicle holds 972 litres of luggage up to the second row of seats – respect! There is even more respect for the courageous step of offering the Defender as a plug-in hybrid. Although this shrinks the trunk volume to 853 liters, this is manageable in view of the falling fuel consumption and the lower pollutant numbers.
Fact check:
✅ 972 liters trunk capacity
✅ A legend with legendary prizes
✅ Practical swing door to the trunk
✅ Numerous equipment gadgets optionally available
2. Kia Sorento – Lots of car at a fair price
At the sight of the Sorento, it is immediately clear that they have not been stingy with spaciousness. The space is huge, which is also evident from the fact that up to 7 people can be accommodated here. What Kia is not stingy with is a warranty. There are a whopping 7 years, so you don't have to worry about that.
The new Sorento generation not only impresses with this, but also with an improved engine range, more safety and better equipment. In terms of price, it almost doesn't matter whether you choose a diesel, gasoline or plug-in hybrid, you just have to know what you need the Sorento for.
In any case, there is plenty of luggage space - at least 693 litres for the 5-seater, at least 604 for the 7-seater. If you lay the seat backrests flat, you can even load up to 2,077 liters.
Fact check:
✅ 604 – 693 litres boot capacity
✅ Good engine selection
✅ 7-year warranty
✅ Modern exterior
3. Peugeot 5008 – 7-seater with plenty of space
Actually, the Peugeot 5008 is the long version of the 3008, but visually it is a little less modern and more boxy on the road. But as far as utility is concerned, this is more of a positive point. Up to 7 seats fit into the 5008 – and that's already standard. You feel quite comfortable in the Peugeot SUV, a little "living room character" and an overall chic interior also contribute to the well-being.
Technically, it is state-of-the-art, but for the price you have to be satisfied with some hard plastic in the interior. You can also be satisfied with the trunk, because 748 liters with five seats and still an acceptable 259 liters with full seating are good values. If you fold down the rear seats, you get a sufficient 1,815 liters.
Fact check:
✅ 748 liters trunk volume
✅ Standard with 7 seats
✅ Good and quite cheap
✅ Also available as an electric version
Station wagons with the largest trunk
Not quite as much space, but certainly enough for most, there is still enough in a station wagon. If you want to buck the SUV trend and still want enough trunk space, a station wagon could be the right choice. Again, there are different models with different prices.

Skoda Superb Combi | €35,607 | Compare offers |
Volkswagen Passat Variant | €34,066 | Compare offers |
Ford Focus Tournament | €26,131 | Compare offers |
1. Skoda Superb Combi – Clever and spacious
If you need a lot of space, but are into more elegant body shapes than SUVs, you may have found your new faithful companion in the Skoda Superb Combi. As a competitor to the VW Passat Variant, the Skoda Superb Combi, which comes from the same company, comes into the light. The developers have hidden many practical gimmicks and handles in the model, including an umbrella in the door panel and an ice scraper in the fuel cap – clever!
The generous luggage compartment volume of 660 litres is just as refined, provided that all seats are in operation. Compared to the Superb as a sedan, the surcharge for the Combi is quite justified, you get a whole 35 liters more trunk space when the seats are in place. A whole suitcase can fit into the luggage compartment. By the way, good trunk values and exemplary consumption values are not exclusion criteria at Skoda: With the Skoda Superb Combi iV, the plug-in hybrid, you can travel up to 60 kilometers purely electrically, but then with a marginally smaller trunk.
Fact check:
✅ 660 liters trunk volume
✅ Chic exterior
✅ VW technology at a lower price
✅ Good workmanship
2. VW Passat Variant – Perfect mix
Another car from VW, but this time not with the Skoda logo: The VW Passat Variant joins the list of spacious family cars. And rightly so, because the Passat Variant has an enormous amount to offer: a variable load floor, lots of accessories and reliable VW technology. So if you don't like the Skoda Superb Combi as too easy an alternative decision, you should be happy with the VW station wagon.
In any case, it has enough space, only tall passengers in the rear are likely to feel disturbed by the coupé-like sloping roofline. Despite the shape of the roof, the trunk is huge, because with a capacity of 650 liters with upright rear seats, it offers plenty of space for all kinds of luggage. A hybrid is also available for this model, which is also reflected in a shrinking trunk.
Fact check:
✅ 650 liters trunk capacity
✅ Long list of accessories with practical helpers
✅ Fair price
✅ High-quality materials
3rd Ford Focus Turnier – underrated but solid
Probably very few people have the Ford Focus Turnier on their radar when it comes to choosing the family station wagon. But that's where the Focus is wrong, because the very well-tuned chassis in particular promises driving pleasure - and in addition, the space in the rear is generously sized and the trunk is also impressive. We think the Focus tournament is an insider tip.
Visually, it has also become chic, even if you have to make a few compromises in terms of equipment, drive and comfort. The increased wheelbase in this version has a positive effect on the luggage compartment, which swallows at least 635 liters. The loading sill is pleasantly low at approx. 64 centimeters, so that heavier calibers can also be balanced into it. If you lay the rear seats flat, there is a cargo space of up to 1,653 liters.
Fact check:
✅ 635 liters trunk capacity
✅ Low loading sill
✅ Relatively cheap for the overall package
✅ Plenty of space in the rear
Electric cars with a large trunk
When switching to an electric car, it is not only the range and battery size that are decisive, but also that you can use it to cope with your everyday life and also your vacation in terms of space. A large trunk is correspondingly important. We have selected three electric cars with a large trunk for you:
Model | Offers from | |
Skoda Enyaq iV | €34,115 | Compare offers |
Tesla Model Y | 41.370 € | Compare offers |
Hyundai Ioniq 5 | €36,522 | Compare offers |
1. Skoda Enyaq iV – reasonable family electric car
The Skoda Enyaq iV is a mixture of van and SUV – actually a good station wagon when it comes to sufficient storage space. In addition, Skoda is known for getting a little space for bits and pieces out of every gap.
The Enyaq offers practicality, good range and a good amount of space at a reasonable price – this is rather the exception in the field of electric cars. The visuals may take a little getting used to, but they are definitely lively. Inside, however, there is again what you expect from a Skoda: solid technology, practical orientation and suitability for everyday use. The trunk also reflects this, with 585 liters it is large enough for everyday use - if you fold down the rear seat, even up to 1,710 liters are available.
Fact check:
✅ 585 liters trunk capacity
✅ Up to 578 km range
✅ Low consumption
✅ Good value for money
Transporte und Urlaubsfahrten sollten also wirklich kein Problem darstellen.
✅ 971 Liter Kofferraumvolumen
✅ Praktisches SUV Design
✅ Viel Reichweite – auch im Winter
✅ Strong drive
3. Hyundai Ioniq 5 – Compact and spacious
The Hyundai Ioniq 5 is a compact SUV, which of course does not reach classic SUV values. With a length of 4.65 meters, however, it still has 520 liters of trunk volume, which corresponds to about 4 suitcases. This means that the electric Hyundai surprises with good values in its class. If you opt for the rear-wheel drive version, you will also find a compartment with 57 litres of storage space under the bonnet, compared to only 27 litres for the all-wheel drive version.
If you fold down the rear seats, you get a load volume of 1,587 liters - this clearly sets the Ioniq 5 apart from other electric SUVs in its class. The high-quality interior and futuristic look are also plus points when deciding which electric car it will be in the end.
✅ 520 liters trunk volume
✅ Unusual look
✅ Compact but spacious
✅ Very long wheelbase
Small cars with a large trunk
If it is only a small car, then you don't necessarily have to do without a large trunk. As you can see, these are small SUVs that still offer a comparatively large amount of trunk space. Maybe there is a suitable one.
Model | Offers from | |
Nissan Juke | €18,344 | Compare offers |
Ford EcoSport | n/a | Compare offers |
Toyota Yaris Cross | €22,991 | Compare offers |
1. Nissan Juke – special but practical
The second Juke generation is on the market and even if it looks a little more adapted, the Juke is still a special SUV. We think that's a good thing – because then it at least stands out from the SUV crowd. The SUV, which is only 4.20 meters long and therefore rather small, also does this when it comes to trunk volume. At up to 422 liters, you can't complain about this size. Compared to the previous model, the current Nissan Juke even offers 20 percent more space for luggage.
If it's more about cruising and you can get by with less comfort equipment, then the Juke is a solid choice.
✅ 422 litres of boot space
✅ Good safety equipment
✅ Solid interior
✅ Comfortable seats
2. Ford EcoSport – small, tall, spacious
Visually, the Ford EcoSport looks a bit like a small pumper, it is relatively short, but tall and comparatively wide. However, this should make the trunk volume good – and it does. Although the luggage compartment is not as large as others, 320 liters is still okay for its size. Overall, it has to be said that the EcoSport lacks some things that are now standard.
It has been in business for some time and Ford has phased out production in 2023. Accordingly, the SUV is only available as a used car - but that doesn't make it any worse.
✅ 320 liters trunk
✅ Clear rear end
✅ Very convenient to get on and off
✅ Good engines
3. Toyota Yaris Cross – robust city SUV
The addition "Cross" is a bit confusing, because you might think that this is a rather beefy SUV with which you can drive off-road without any problems. The Yaris Cross is visually a small adventure car, but it actually prefers to be on the road in the city. With a trunk volume of 397 liters, however, you can also take a short trip into nature. "Cross" in this context only means that the Yaris has been raised a little – that's it.
Its unique selling point is certainly the full hybrid, because there is currently no other model in its class that can boast of it. It's the same with all-wheel drive, you can choose it and no other small SUV car offers that at the moment.
✅ 397 liters trunk
✅ Optionally with all-wheel drive
✅ Pretty design
✅ Intuitive to use
